PORTA Energy Project

Report

In 2007 the PORTA Board of Education embarked on a plan to save the District Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars a year in energy costs and delay the need for the District to ask taxpayers for a tax increase.  The project was completed in 2009 and included Geothermal Heating/Cooling at the PORTA Jr/Sr High, a 600kW wind turbine and solar array.  The project was and still is a one of a kind in Illinois and continues to save the district between$300,000 and $375,000 a year in energy costs. Soon after completion of the energy project the PORTA Board of Education focused on lowering costs at PORTA Central, the newest building in the District.  After securing a $50,000 grant the district decided to replace the original control system with a newer version.  As a result the building’s energy use was nearly reduced in half.  Between the two projects the District has reduced its reliance on electricity by over 70%, reducing the total kWh from 3.73 million kWh to 1.3 million kWh a year, a total reduction of 2.4 million kWh’s saved per year.

The PORTA Board is proud of their decision to complete the energy savings project and are excited today about the annual savings as they were when the project was proposed.
